Faith Leader Resources

Why Faith Leader Resources?

Almost 1 in 4 Northeast Florida citizens have a connection to the military. Active duty members, Veterans and military families are members of all religious faiths and look to their faith leaders for guidance and support. However, many members of the clergy have a limited understanding of the essential issues common to the military community. With greater understanding, faith communities might better use their resources to support Veterans and family members who otherwise may feel isolated, alienated and helpless. Educating faith communities might also reduce the stigma of mental health needs that further complicate the problems.

To enhance the understanding of the military by our faith community, The Fire Watch ; Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic at Centerstone ; Operation New Uniform ; Jacksonville Military Veterans Coalition and other veteran serving organizations have developed this page to assist Faith Leaders as they support their military members and their families. a survey to gain your input to assist in developing a Faith Leader Military and Veteran Awareness Training. Our intent is to gain insight from your input and to arrange some upcoming virtual and in-person events specifically for faith leaders.

FAQs

  • How do I contact a chaplain to conduct funeral services for a veteran or retiree?

Ask your local funeral director to assist you in this. Most funeral directors will have the contact numbers for nearby military installations or Veterans Administration office that can offer support in arranging military burial honors, including the services of a chaplain, to those eligible veterans and retirees.

  • What is the definition of a military veteran?

The Veterans Administration (VA) defines the word veteran as “a person who served in the active military, naval, or air service, and who was discharged or released therefrom under conditions other than dishonorable.”  Veterans may have served in combat zones in Europe, the Pacific, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, and other areas of the world. Not every veteran served in a combat zone, but that does not lessen the importance of their service.  The type of military discharge an individual receives can have an enormous impact on the benefits they may receive from their service. Through their service, veterans can be eligible for various benefits (primarily through the VA), including medical care, pension, home loans, and other benefits.

  • How does a service member determine if he/she is eligible for Veterans Administration benefits?

Service members should contact the Veterans Administration to determine their eligibility.  This site provides an overview of veterans’ benefits.
